Thesis Sprint
20 Feb 2009
Oh my! How time flies when you’re having fun (or not). It’s almost March, and for me, that means the time has come to choose. Do I graduate on time or not? Uhmmm… I think I’ll choose the former, thank you very much.
It’s hard to believe that it has already been 2 years. Now, it all boils down to the last 2 WEEKS! Yep, in two weeks, I should have a draft thesis documentation to give out to my panel. I plan to accomplish that goal whatever it takes.
So now I need a system that will allow me to cope with the extreme time pressure of writing a pseudo-book in the span of 2 weeks. Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a little, since a lot of the content is already lying around and I just have to put them into a coherent form.
My plan is to have daily milestones instead of the usual weekly/bi-monthly/God-forbid-monthly thesis updates I currently have. Everyday I’ll finish a significant part of the work. Unfortunately that means Saturdays and Sundays too. So, right now I’m making a list of the absolute minimum work I should get done for the next 14 days so I get a draft copy of my thesis manuscript by March 6. After that’s done, it’s just a matter of having the discipline and the energy to stick to that very tight schedule.
It’s gonna be tough, but I do have a lot of motivations to finish the thesis as soon as possible. These includes:
- Summer is “raket” mode, i.e. make some money/save up for the rainy days. I can’t do that if I’m still working on my thesis.
- I already have an informal admission to a good US school (see life-goal #1). I would hate to disappoint by not graduating on time.
- My scholarship / TA-ship technically ends this sem so I don’t have money anymore (unless I win in the lottery system bet, wink wink!). Hehehe.
- The longer you work on your thesis the harder it gets to actually finish it (imho)
There are lots of other motivating factors, some of which are of a personal nature. Suffice to say, I have every reason to finish and absolutely no reason not to. Please wish me luck and I’ll really need your prayers.
I probably won’t blog until I’m done with my plan (otherwise, it just defeats the purpose). So I guess I’ll just see you on the other side.
